Cass might not know much at the start of the book, quite literally, but she knows that the life she's been forced to live isn't the one she wants-and that the weapon her father forged her into can be used for more than evil. She learns a lot about herself while learning to live amongst "normal" society, including how to speak and read. Shadow of the Batgirl follows Cassandra on her journey of self-discovery and her realization of what family truly is. Shadow of the Batgirl, written by Sarah Kuhn and illustrated by Nicole Goux, introduces readers to the sheltered child assassin and daughter of a super-villain known as Cassandra Cain, who eventually dons the Batgirl cowl. ![]() The latest in DC's line of Young Adult graphic novels is out, and it's a return to original stories for this line (rather than the also excellent adaptations of the DC Icons prose novels). ![]() ![]() ![]() He adds, “That’s the kind of thing that makes ‘The Walking Dead’ more difficult, but also more fulfilling. So all of those bigger threats have to sit in the world and work sort of like real life.” But in ‘The Walking Dead’ - apart from the zombies - it’s very grounded, very realistic. “When you have a superhero comic you can introduce a strange race of monsters, new planets, another dimension,” he said. “Now it’s this thing with hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of fans invested in it and I need to do it justice, I need to tell a cool, evolving story.”Īnd Kirkman believes that’s a little more difficult with a book like “The Walking Dead” than with traditional superhero comics. “In the early days, it was this fun comic book I did paying tribute to all of the zombie movies I loved,” he said. ![]() If anything, the pressure he puts on himself has increased. ![]() Little has changed for Kirkman in the years since. Yendi takes place before Jhereg, as we follow Vlad’s rise to power and the start of his romance with fellow assassin Cawti. Jhereg details the largest contract Vlad has ever taken on, having to make use of every skill and connection he’s developed over the course of his career. These stories do an excellent job of not only immersing us into Vlad’s world of intrigue and “aggressive negotiations,” but also letting the reader see different aspects of his own character as well. ![]() And he is the narrator of the Book of Jhereg, an anthology of the first three books of Brust’s long-running fantasy series. He is an excellent swordsman, a sharp wit, an even sharper investigator, and a practicing witch. ![]() And our guide through this world is an Easterner high up in Dragaeran society: an assassin by the name of Vlad Taltos. Within this medieval-stasis world, there are Dragaerans (who stand in for the traditional Elves of Fantasy Literature) and Easterners (who are a Hungarian-derived offshoot of human beings). And when it comes to Steven Brust‘s Dragaera, there is no disappointment in any regard. There’s something delightful about a well-constructed fictional universe, whether it’s in the easy-flowing idioms, the diverse individuals and cultures, or the grand scale one feels upon entering. ![]() ![]() The thing is, it doesn’t just stay in Slices. ![]() We also have RELEVANT News and at the end of the show, the triumphant return of “What’s Jesse Thinking.” But can we be honest?
